You may or may not be aware that OFCOM, the government
body responsible for the broadcasting airwaves of the UK,
have announced that they will be changing the channel currently
used for wireless microphones (Channel 69).
This change is occurring for the following reasons
- To bring us in-line with the frequency bands used
in the rest of Europe.
- To enable the current channel to provide more space
for mobile broadband.
This will be happening
in 2012, most likely
just after the Olympic games.
Anyone using a wireless
microphone system will be affected, both those
who pay for a licence
and those who use the free/public frequencies.
Your current wireless microphones will cease to
work once the switchover has taken place.
There is currently no method of changing, adapting
or re-tuning your microphones for use on the
new channel. Wireless microphone
systems are not “user” adjustable. It is cost
prohibitive as most of the electronics in the microphone
and receiver are affected. Some manufacturers, however,
do offer this service but are charging typically £500
per microphone, effectively making many current systems
redundant due to costs.
